THE BLUE WINDOW Episode 4

I knocked on Kwesi’s door; it was a Saturday so there was no school though I had to go for classes. I didn’t feel like going, so I wanted to hang with Kwesi as I usually did whenever I didn’t want to go anywhere or stay at home either.

I knocked again and when the door opened, his friend Ato stood there staring at me.

“Hi sexy” I stared at him disdainfully. I didn’t like him, he didn’t know that but Kwesi knew, mostly because he looked at me like something he wanted to have for dinner along with wine and chocolate.I forced a smile.

“Is Kwesi in?” I asked as I tried to keep my smile plastered on my face. He opened the door wider and I saw Kwesi lying down on the bed totally oblivious of the fact that I was there.

“Kwesi?” I called to him.

“Hey” he said and went back to the movie he was watching.

“Ei, are you guys having a lovers quarrel?” Ato asked. Kwesi raised his head to look at him.

“Don’t be an idiot Ato, I hate stupid comments, I told you, she’s just my friend”Ato looked at both of us and laughed.

“Who are you guys deceiving, me or yourselves, if she is just a friend, why did you warn me to stay away from her?”

Kwesi rose angrily and stood, he was in just shorts and the sight of his body made me feel odd but I tried to distract myself by concentrating on the nonsense his friend was spewing.

“Because you are an idiot and not good enough for her”.

Ato looked at both of us and laughed.

“And you are?” He asked whiles looking at him. They exchanged some confusing looks for almost a minute.

“Get out of my house” Kwesi said angrily and watched Ato walk out without a word.

“What are you doing here?” He asked me.

“Don’t ask me questions”. I said as I walked past him, I raised the curtain slightly to look in my house but there was no one there.

I turned and saw Kwesi looking at me with an odd look on his face.

“What is it?” I asked,

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“What, apart from the fact that you are ugly is there another reason I should be staring at you?” He asked. I picked up one pillow and hit him, a pillow fight had started as we laughed and hit each other.

THE BLUE WINDOW  Episode 3

The look my mom gave me when I entered the house signified that I was in very big trouble. She pulled off her cloth an re-wrapped it around her body, not caring who saw her half naked body

“ Good afternoon ma” she looked at me angrily.

“You were outside with that useless friend of yours huh, waiting for your grandmother to come and cook the banku right? Yooo, you follow that foolish boy, if you get pregnant, you’ll go to the village, and you’ll see how you’ll suffer, foolish girl, when you are advised you don’t take it”.

I watched my mom quietly as my anger built.

“Ma, why do you always talk like this, I told you, Fred is just my friend”.

“Shut up, stupid girl, when I talk don’t talk, You better go and put that thing you are carrying called bag down and come and cook before your father gets home”.

As I walked away I turned to look at her.
“Ma, what are we eating the banku with?” She raised her head to look at me

“Ah, what, the rest of the palmnut soup in the fridge am I supposed to sell it?”

“But ma we’ve been eating that soup all through the week, I’m tired of it”.

“Yoo, rich girl, you are tired of the soup, don’t worry okay madam, you can go prepare the soup you want, or you can go and get something from the restaurant”. She said sarcastically

“I’ll grind pepper” I said with a scowl on my face. She smiled “

“ok, that’s not a bad idea” I smiled back.
“But if I see one pepper or one tomato missing from my basket you’ll go to school without money tomorrow, nonsense, are you better than those of us eating the palmnut soup?” She took of her slippers and threw it while I ducked.

“Go and change and come and cook” she screamed after me.

I went inside and changed, despite her anger and complaints, my mom allowed me to grind the pepper, with her pepper and tomatoes, she even topped it up with some fish for me, even though we were always seen fighting the love was deep.

As I ate I looked at Kwesi’s window, his light was on making the window look blue but I couldn’t see him through it.

When I turned my mom was staring at me.

“ is that where the food is, you better eat fast and go and do the dishes before I smear the soup on your face” the thought of my mom smearing the soup on my face sent me into fits of laughter, she imagined it too for she started to laugh with me.

THE BLUE WINDOW Episode 2

I walked with Fred as we chatted and giggled, he was a good friend from school and we liked each other…..as very good friends, I had been bitten and I was being careful, we stood in front of my house and chatted and laughed.

“Did you see what Belinda wore to school today?” He asked as we both laughed hysterically.

“I was wondering what exactly it was, a kimono or a choir robe?”  Fred laughed and pushed my head playfully.

“you’re crazy, in the name of fashion they are beginning  to dress like aliens”. We both laughed.

He dipped his hand into his pocket and pulled out a cute little flower.

“I saw this and remembered you, I don’t have a girlfriend, and you are the closest girl in my life so….” We laughed as he gave it to me and kissed me on the cheek. I held his hand and looked warmly into his eyes.

“you are an amazing friend Fred……no, you’re an amazing Fred Friend”.

He laughed hard and looked at me with smiling eyes as I laughed.

“Who gave birth to a nut job like you?” He asked as realization dawned on me.

“Oh damn, we’ve been standing here for thirty minutes, the old girl will kill me, I have to go.

“ Hold on, when you were busy sleeping the teacher gave us an assignment” he slipped his hand into his pocket and drew out a sheet of paper.

“I wrote it for you” he said as he handed it to me. I looked at him and smiled.

“You are the best” I said and hugged him.

“See you in school tomorrow” I said as he walked away.

“If you have a problem with the homework, call me and I’ll do it for you”.
I nodded and smiled as he walked away. I raised my head to look at Kwesi’s window and saw him standing there, watching me, with a cold look on his face, It was an odd look, I didn’t like it, I kept staring but he just stood there, he didn’t say a word, he just stared so I waved at him.

He stood there for about ten seconds, not waving back, not a word, and then he lowered his curtain. I felt a surprised look cross my face, I guess my face was more surprised than me, was he mad at me? What did I do wrong?

THE BLUE WINDOW Episode 1

As I walked down the dirt road, I couldn’t control it, the pain in my heart, the tears, I didn’t know what to do, I was helpless, i covered my eyes as I wiped my tears, suddenly I bumped into someone and raised my head, my tear-stained face an embarrassment to me.
I looked at him, Kwesi, my friend from childhood, we had known each other and been very good friends years back when we were very young, I had moved to go live with an uncle and his wife and had returned just about six months ago, we had restarted our friendship and it was going well, he was my confidant and I never hesitated to share my problems with him.
I had just started a relationship, my first boyfriend, and I had shared all the information about our goings and comings with him because I needed his advice so as not to mess up. He didn’t say a word, he just wrapped his arm around my shoulder and led me to his house, I was distraught, there was nothing I could do, when we got there, he led me to the hall and sat me down, a few minutes later he was back with a glass of juice that I accepted gratefully. He sat beside me and watched me sip on it, the way he stared at me made me nervous and he must have noticed it for he spoke his first words.
“What did Jack do?” he asked, wide eyed, staring at me.
“How do you know I’m like this because of Jack?” I asked with a bit of anger for I hated being weak and obvious. He smiled and looked down at his feet.
“How long have we known each other, I know you Eli, I’ve never seen you cry even as a kid, what did he do?” he asked again.
“he….he cheated, I caught him in bed with a friend”. He rose, surprise etched on his face.
“He what? Why? After all you’ve done for him, this was the best he could do? Well, you refuse to introduce the guy to me” He looked at me; it was obvious he was angry.
“And he doesn’t even value the fact that he was the first man in your life, stupid idiot”. He hugged me as I let the tears flow, in an hour, he had got me laughing as if nothing had happened.
We sat in his bed, his arms wrapped around me as we watched Mr. Bones. I had a best friend in Kwesi, he cared for me, he liked me, he took care of me but there was something I couldn’t quite lay my hand on, there was something he was hiding from me and I was definitely going to find out………..little did i know it was something that was going to change my life for ever

Nigeria warns diplomats against violating channels of communication

Nigeria's Ministry of foreign Affairs on Friday warned the ambassadors of various countries against violating the diplomatic channels of communication between them and their host country.

Enikaonlaye frowned at undiplomatic way of seeking audience with the government where some embassies communicate directly with the presidency and other arms of government rather than going through the ministry "In saying this however we must hasten to note that some diplomats and some missions are in the habit of going above the Ministry of foreign affairs in seeking audiences and engagement with government at even higher levels.

"As regard to seeking for audiences, please make you request known to our principal at least a month ahead so as to give room for preparation and respect for authority "It is in our interest and yours that we have sufficient notice," he said.

MURDER CASE EPISODE 1-3

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

Mr. Olundare Jacobs felt a pang of guilt as he stepped out of the blackmaria.

As a kid who was brought up in the barracks, he used to see many criminals being transported in that van to the prison and he would always say

“why would someone waste his life in criminal activities when he knows fully well that one day, he would be transported in this dark, poor ventilated van whose only route is from court to prison, prison to court? Surely, i would never step my feet in those vans”.

How would he have known that 25years later, he would be the one inside the van? Well, as a child he didn’t know that someday he was going to point a gun at his wife.

The thought of his wife made tears to drop from his eyes. Their relationship was the type only obtainable in movies and romance stories. He remembered vividly how she married him despite pressure from her family to marry the promising soldier officer Paul Adeyemi.

He was just an ordinary civil servant back then in the Lagos state ministry of information and communication.

He had met the beautiful miss Grace Briggs when she was posted to the ministry as a youth corper.

He never used to believe in love at first sight but grace changed his perception, not only about love but life in its entirety.

Mr. Jacobs doesn’t even know the part of her body he loves the most. Was it her radiant hair which is as black as Taye Taiwo’s face or her lips which was wonderfully placed on her face just below her pointed but beautiful nose.

He doesn’t even know If it was her shiny eyes that could give the stars a run for their money or her fair skin which sparkles in sunlight. In Jacobs own words

“grace, even monalisa would be jealous of you”.

Back then, he would always use his meagre salary to take her out for lunch until immediately after she completed her youth service when they decided to tie the nuptial knots.

It only took the effect of the scorching sun to bring him out from his journey through the land of emotional el dorado.

He had just stepped out of the van. He was standing taller and well built than the two policemen who where escorting him. He was very dark, infact his mates in university used to call him blacky which is one of the reasons he married someone who would complement him.

His hairs were unkept, what do you expect from someone who was just coming out of a police cell?Even though he has not been proven guilty of any crime, he has been sleeping in the police cell for over a month. The law stipulates that no citizen should spend more than 24hours in police custody except sentenced by a law court but it seems the law and the police force are enemies. Its ironic since the police are supposed to protect the law.

He looked at his environment, it was like every other typical trial court in nigeria. He took a deep breathe but just as he was about to enter the court, he sighted paul Adeyemi. He just shook his head and walked into the court room

*********

“Court rise!!!” The bailiff shouted and everybody stood up. Justice clement okoro walked into the court room. He was an old man who was probably close to retirement. If you place his age anywhere around 70years, you just might be right because he actually looks younger anytime he smiles and older when he frowns.

Today was one of his bad days as he was not smiling. His facial expression could be read in a thousand different ways but mr. Jacobs read it as,

“Am tired of this job, always sentencing people to death”. Truly, Justice Okoro had sentenced countless people to death so when jacobs saw him, he knew his freedom was just wishful thinking.

The case was announced by the court administrator who also announced the presence of all the witnesses.

“The case before this court is a murder case filed by the nigeria police force against Mr. Olundare jacobs” he carefully read.

“Mr olundare jacobs, what is your plea? Are you guilty or not?” the judge asked.

“Not guilty” Jacobs answered non-chalantly.

I just hope he is right, i cant afford to slam a ‘life imprisonment’ sentence. Justice Okoro kept his thoughts to himself. He called on the prosecutor for his opening statement.

A fairly old man stood up. Looking at his face, you’ll think he is a septagenerian but he’s just in his early fifties. If you say he was old due to his family problems, you probably would be right because his only daughter chose to marry someone whom he had no iota of trust for.

Despite his disapproval, she still went ahead to marry him. Your guess is as good as mine, his name is Barrister Jim Briggs, father of Mrs grace jacobs whose death, they stand in court today to find the culprit.

“mmm mmmm.. .Barrister Briggs cleared his throat.

“Fellow citizens of this nation, we are here today the 21st of october 2013 to prove that Mr. Olundare Jacobs standing here is responsible for the death of his wife, Mrs. Grace Jacobs”.

He hates calling his daughter Grace Jacobs, he rather prefers to call her Grace Briggs but for the sake of the court, he called her the name. He allowed the information he just dropped to sink into the ears of his audience before he continued.

“On the 15th of august 2013 at about 10:30pm, Mr. Olundare Jacobs allegedly shot and killed his wife. Such people should not be allowed to walk in the soceity as they are bad eggs that can currupt the good ones. I hereby pray this court to serve justice in this case. This is my case”. He bowed and left for his seat.

Justice okoro smiled and called on the defendant. He had known Barrister Briggs to be a man that doesn’t beat around the bush. He always makes his points brief but very strong.

The defendant was a young lawyer probably in his early thirties. His name is Barrister Clement Obong. He was a light complexioned young man with a well trimmed moustache. He fell in the category of people that were created on God’s bad day. He was a very ‘brief creature’. That was the term his clique in the University used to refer to his shortness.

Olundare jacobs who happens to be the accused was also a member of that clique. He got up and looked at Barrister Briggs, he then gave a deadly smile. He had history with Barrister Briggs.

Immediately after being called to bar, the young lawyer Clement Obong had gone into Barrister Briggs Firm to work as a lawyer in the firm but he was turned down. He can still remember Barrister Briggs exact words to him.

“young man, this is not a chamber for jokers with wig on the head, this is a chamber for real lawyers”.

Barrister clement obong has a point to prove. To show that he is not a joker with wigs on the head but a real lawyer. He arranged his wig and stepped forward.

“My lord, barrister clement started. This case as convincing as it might look is a mere case of slander against my client.

1. The case holds no water as contrary to their claims that my client shot and killed his wife, there is no autopsy report to back that claim. Infact the body of the victim is nowhere to be found.

2. My client, Mr Olundare Jacobs, after thorough scrutiny by members of his community was chosen along with few men in his community to save lives. He is a member of the vigilante group in his community so i see no reason why he should take the life of his wife.

Homicide is a very strong accusation and i dont expect the testimony of one man to hold weight. I hereby pray this court to strike out this case in the name of justice” he concluded his statement.

“once a joker, always a joker” Barrister Briggs muttered under his breathe. He doesn’t have time to show his swagg, he just had to make sure his daughter’s killer was sent behind bars else he would have showed Barrister clement that the SAN at the end of his name isn’t just a mere fuss.

“can we have the first witness please” justice okoro spoke to Barrister Briggs.

“The first witness is Paul Adeyemi. If you are here please come forward” Barrister briggs called him forward.

A youngman in the same age bracket as jacobs stood up. He was also very dark. It seems as if his occupation made him stand under the scorching sun everyday. He was tall and well built.

15th August 2013

Lagos State ministry of information and communication organized a dinner night. Mrs. Grace Jacobs being a fluent speaker of english was chosen to be the anchor of the programme.

As early as 3:00pm that day, she was already dressed up and was about to go to the event when her husband, Olundare Jacobs came in. Jacobs has been unlucky as a retrenchment programme of the state government had caught up with him. Since then, he had failed to find himself a job so he was always at home, coupled with the fact that he had become a vigilante.

“Miss universe. Jacobs complemented his wife and she just smiled. Where are you going dressed like this?”

“Darling, you remember that dinner night i told you about? She paused, waiting for an answer. Jacobs nodded his head to signify that he remembered.
The dinner night is slated for today”. She concluded.

“Thought you just called it a dinner night, what kind of dinner night starts by 3:00pm” he asked, looking at his wrist watch.

“You know this is my first time of anchoring this kind of event, the chairman of the central planning committee requested that i should be there by 3:00pm so he can fill me in on how to proceed with the event. I’m even late” she narrated
.
“so i guess i will just be the only one in this house. Just make sure you dont move your lips in those your sexy manner, those men can be funny atimes”

“i promise, i wont even smile” she said and laughed away.

10:20PM THAT SAME DAY

Grace walked into the house tired. The dinner night was a huge success and everybody attributed the success to her. She even switched off her phone when the congratulatory calls where getting too much.

She trew her bag on the couch and was about going into the bedroom when the voice of her husband startled her.

“Where are you coming from?” he asked.

She switched on the light to behold her husband holding a gun. She was shocked but then, she remembered that armed robbers had been giving them sleepless nights in the street so she thought her husband being a vigilante had chased armed robbers that day.

“what are you talking about? I told you i was attending a dinner night”

“Dinner night!! So which of the directors did you sleep with or was it the commisioner himself?” Jacobs accused.

“I dont have time for this, am very tired” grace said and was about going into the bedroom when her husband spoke.

“Dont even take another step”. She turned back and saw her husband pointing a gun at her. She was shocked. Her husband had never la!d a finger on her not to talk of pointing a gun at her. Yes he had lost his Job but that doesn’t mean he has lost his mind
.
“I was in that establishment before you. I know how it is done. Those big men choose people to spend the night with. I gave you the benefit of doubt but you failed me”

What are you talking about, i never slept with anyone” Grace shouted.

“Put the gun down” a voice spoke. They both turned their heads and saw Paul Adeyemi, pointing a gun at Jacobs.

“We can settle this without…. Kpaa” Grace was trying to complete her statement but she was shot. She fell down to the ground.

“Objection my lord, the Barrister is using foul words in the court.

“Objection sustained” Justice Okoro shouted. Barrister, vulgar words are not allowed in this court.

“I guess all am trying to say is, even if my client truly said what Fidelis has accused him of, then he probably said it under the influence of alcohol. But there is a difference of seven hours between past 3 and past 10. So am sure the alcohol must have cleared from my client’s face even before his wife came back so he wouldn’t carry out an action he had said when still under the influence of alcohol. I rest my case” Barrister clement concluded.

**********

10:45PM 11th AUGUST 2013

The sound of siren blaring in the atmosphere would give you the impression that the president of the federal republic of nigeria was passing, but why would the president pass through a slum?

Neighbours had gathered to catch a glimpse of the ‘VIP’ that was disturbing their peaceful night rest. They were shocked to see an ambulance and a police van parked in front of Mr. Jacobs house.

Mr. Jacobs was a peace lover who was known by all and sundry. He was one of the few men who had courageously stood up and volunteered himself to fight against the incessant armed robbery attacks in the area.

The neighbours couldn’t go close to the area for fear of police but some few people were saying that armed robbers had attacked the family and shot someone.

It was only when they saw Mr.Jacobs coming out with handcuffs that they knew it was more than an armed robbery attack.

He was bundled into the police van while a body carried on a stretcher was dropped inside the ambulance. It was covered with a white linen.

The Police van drove away while the Ambulance drove away via a seperate route. A small car followed the ambulance.Dr. Amos, please come to the dock” Barrister clement called out.

A smart looking young man walked to the dock.

“How are you feeling Dr. Amos?” Barrister clement asked.

“Like never before” he replied.

“Great! So you were the head of the medical team that went to the house of Mr. Jacobs that day. Anything you would want the court to hear?” Barrister clement asked.

“As you must have heared, the ambulance conveying the corpse was involved in a ghastly accident and it caught fire. Before then however, i was able to remove the bullet from the patient’s body” Dr. Amos explained.

“Oh!! That reminds me” Barrister clement said and walked to his bag. He brought out a transparent polyethene bag.

“Inside this leather bag is the bullet that hit Mrs. Grace.

See, i’m not a millitary personnel so i took this bullet to the soldier base and i was told that this is a Soviet 5.45x39mm millitary grade bullet.

The question is, where would an odinary vigilante get this kind of bullet? Although am sure a soldier officer has access to such bullets” he paused a little bit for his information to pierce the heart of his listeners.

“Any other thing you would want this court to hear?” he asked Doctor Amos.

“yes, one more thing. When i was examining the victim, i discovered the bullet pierced her at the side of her abdomen. I dont know if that will help”

“Sure,it will help alot” Barrister clement said and turned to face the court.

According to Mr.paul, the deceased was facing her husband who was pointing a gun at his wife while he walked in through the door. He was at the left hand side of Mrs. Grace and the right hand side of Mr. Jacobs.

Again, i am not a millitary personnel but i dont know of any bullet that can carry out a parabolic kind of motion. If my client truly shot the gun, the bullet would have pierced the deceased at the Front and not on the side. I rest my case” he smiled and went back to his seat.

“Would you like to cross-examine the witness?” Justice Okoro asked.

“Yes, your honour” Barrister briggs answered and stood up. He was with a picture.

“Dr. Amos, please look carefully at this picture, are your the one in this picture?” Barrister briggs asked.

Dr. Amos took a brief look at the picture. It was his graduation party. He snapped with Barrister clement and Mr. Jacobs. They all graduated from the same university.

“yes am the one” Dr. Amos replied.

“So you are friends with Mr. Jacobs?”

“Yes” Dr. Amos replied.

Barrister Briggs then turned and faced the court.

“As a boy growing up, i knew how friendship could be. I could do anything for my friends. How are we sure that Dr. Amos here is not trying to save his friend?”

“It is unethical, i can never do such” Dr. Amos cut in.

“But is there a possibility that someone can do such a thing?” Barrister Briggs asked.

“Someone, but definitely not me” Dr. Amos replied.

“My lord, Dr. Amos just admitted that it is possible for someone to lie just to cover up his friend’s act. I hereby rest my case” he said.

Justice Okoro looked at his wristwatch, the court session was already taking longer than he had expected. He decided he was going to adjourn the case after the next witness.

“anyother witness? He asked.

“Yes your honour” barrister clement shouted.

My last witness is Mrs. Grace Jacobs, please come out”.

The whole court was shocked. Can a ghost testify?

Barrister clement just looked at Barrister Briggs and smiled mischievously.
******************

11:00PM, 11Th AUGUST 2013

The Ambulance was travelling at a ‘break neck’ speed that Dr.Amos who was in the other car was finding it difficult to follow them.

“what’s wrong with this driver sef” Dr.Amos said to himself and picked up his phone.

“Adamu, whats wrong with you? Reduce your speed” he spoke to the person on the other end.

“Doctor the patient just sneezed, she is still alive” the driver informed Dr. Amos.
Dr. Amos was shocked. He was personally at the Jacobs house when the patient died.

“Adamu what are you talking about, the patient already gave up”

The next thing Dr. Amos heard from the other end was Jesus! Jesus!! Jesus!!! He raised up his head and saw that the ambulance was just involved in an accident.

The driver of the ambulance was so engrossed in the call he was making with Dr. Amos that he didn’t notice he was about entering a ‘T-junction’. A toyota Tundra 2013 model was also aproaching the junction with nitro speed. Before Adamu, the driver of the ambulance could do anything, the Tundra hit him so hard from the side. The ambulance swayed away from the road, its tyres were not able to hold fast to the coal tar.

The force of the collision, coupled with the bad road made the ambulance to somersault and in the process, the back door opened and grace’s body fell to the ground.

Dr. Amos quickly applied his brake and his car came to a hault. He came out and ran to check the ambulance for survivors.

He saw grace lying on the ground. He picked her up and took her to his car. She was calling out weakly

“Jacobs…Jacobs..Jacobs”

After dropping her in his car, Dr. Amos wanted to go back to the ambulance when he heard an explosion. The ambulance went up in flames. The smoke was so thick one would think it’s an evil spirit hovering over the Ambulance.

The tundra also had its fair share of damage and Dr.Amos was in a state of dilemma, whether to check the tundra for survivors or take grace home for medical attention. He opted for the later, he took grace to his house but not before calling his hospital to inform them of the accident.

It was at Dr. Amos home that grace was treated without the knowlege of anybody.

*********

Somewhere around the neighborhood of the court, there was a 6 story building. It was the building of ‘Gmax group of companies’.

On the roof of the building stood a young man, he was wearing a khaki and a black hood. His phone rang and he picked it.

“Agent white, the operation parameter has changed, new target is Grace Jacobs” a voice spoke from the other end.

“Grace Jacobs? I thought she was dead?” agent white asked.

“Thats what they made us believe, but right now she is about to testify.

Agent white brought out his binoculars and viewed the court building.

“i see her” he said.

“make sure she doesn’t testify. If she does then our man would go to prison” the voice said.

“Trust me, she is going back to the land of the dead” agent white said. He touched his sniper and smiled

“come on baby, we have work to do” he said.

Grace walked to the front slowly. Some people were even making way for her, nobody wanted to touch a ghost. She looked at the Judge, unlike others, he wasn’t shocked. He had seen more suprises. She looked at her father, she couldn’t read his mind. She walked into the witness box and Barrister clement came forward to question her.

Meanwhile, at the roof of ‘Gmax group of companies, agent white’s phone rang and he picked it up.

“Whats wrong with you, she is almost testifying” a voice shouted.

“I dont have a clear view, someone is in my line of sight” agent white replied.

“I dont care, shoot the im’becile” the voice shouted back and the line went dead.

********

“How are you doing?” Barrister clement asked Mrs. Grace.

She held back tears and she spoke

“I’m fine”

“what really happened to you?”

Tuuuuaaaaaaah!!! The sniper was shot.
Everybody scampered to safety.

“someone has just been shot! Call the paramedics” A police officer at the premises shouted

FLASH BACK

She turned back and saw her husband pointing a gun at her. She was shocked. Her husband had never laid a finger on her not to talk of pointing a gun at her. Yes he had lost his Job but that doesn’t mean he has lost his mind.

***********

Paul Adeyemi stood inside the dock, a bible was brought since he was a christain and he took an oath placing his hand on the bible.

I, paul Adeyemi do swear that the evidence i shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. So help me God.

Barrister Briggs walked up to the witness.

“how are you doing Mr.paul?” he asked him.

“Am fine thank you” paul replied.

“oh, i can see you are really fine. So i was told you were the one who alerted the police and paramedics about the incident at the house of Mr. Jacobs. As a first hand witness, what really happened?” he asked.

“I was going to my house that faithful day, and i decided to branch jacobs house. When i got there, i saw him pointing a gun at his wife but before i could make any move he shot her” paul explained.

“And what evidence do you have of this claim” barrister briggs asked.

“A picture. I took a snapshot of jacobs pointing a gun at his wife” he replied.

Barrister Briggs turned and walked back to his table while still talking.

“At this juncture, i’ll like to present my first evidence” he brought out a picture. Exhibit was bodly written at the back. In this photo, jacobs can be seen pointing a gun at his wife. He passed the picture to the court administrator who passed it to the judge. The picture was enhanced using a projector for the whole court to see. Barrister Briggs then turned and faced paul.

“Do you know of any reason why Mr. Jacobs could kill his wife?” he asked.

“He is a lost Man, he lost his job while his wife still has hers, thats why he is transferring his anger to the wife” paul answered.

“Thank you mr. Paul, you have been very helpful” Barrister Briggs said, he turned to the judge

“i rest my case”he said and walked to his seat.

The judge turned to Barrister clement

“would you like to cross-examine the witness?”

“Yes my lord” he said and stood up.

Mr.paul can you please tell the court the kind of relationship you have with the jacobs family?

“objection my lord, the question is irrelevant to this case” Barrister briggs shouted.

“objection overruled” the judge came to the rescue. Go on barrister.

“So, Mr. Paul, whats your relationship with the jacobs”.

“I’m a family friend and am very close to the couple” he replied.

“Any proof? Perhaps group pictures, or text messages. Do you even have their phone number?”.

Paul thought of his next answer before answering.

“No”“Good, so it has been established that you are not so close to the family, so what took you to their house at about past 10 in the night?”

“like i said, i was passing and i decided to check on them” paul replied.

“Okay, so correct me if am wrong. You went into the house, you saw Jacobs pointing a gun at his wife and instead of saving her you decided to snap pictures?” Barrister clement asked.

“i needed the pictures for evidence” paul replied.

“Evidence? So you planned on uploading it on facebook? There was laughter in the court and when they were finally brought to Order, Barrister clement continued. Forgive me Mr. Paul, but i just want to know, do you have any personal vendetta against Mr. Jacobs?

“No” paul answered.

Barrister clement went to his bag and brought out a white paper. He showed paul.

“Is this your signature” he asked.

“looks like it but signatures can be forged” paul answered.

“Dont worry about that. Few years back you asked for the deceased hands in marriage but she refused and you threatened her that if you do not get her then nobody else will. This is the statement she wrote in the police station. It only took the intervention of your boss in the army for you to sign” Barrister clement passed the paper to the court administrator. He then faced the judge

“i rest my case” he said and went back to his seat.

Even Justice okoro was impressed. He faced Barrister Briggs

“any other witness”.

“yes, my lord, i would like to question the accused” Barrister Briggs said.

“Mr. Jacobs, i would like you to give me straight forward answers to this my few questions and please be audible” Barrister Briggs advised.

“Did you kill your wife?”

Jacobs was shocked. He had expected barrister Briggs to start from the light questions but he just went straight to the point.

“Answer the question young man, did you kill your wife?” Barrister Briggs was getting emotional.

“No” Jacobs replies.

“Did you point a gun at your wife? I mean a loaded gun”.

“No”

The court was shocked, less than five minutes ago they saw a picture of him pointing a gun at his wife but here he was denying the fact.

“Are you saying that picture was photo-shopped?” Barrister Briggs asked. Do you know the repercussion if you lie to this court?”

“Objection my lord, he is pressing my client to admit to a crime he didn’t commit” Barrister clement shouted

“Objection overruled, you may proceed barrister” justice Okoro shouted.

“So you are saying the picture was photo-shopped”

“No, am saying the gun i pointed at my wife wasn’t loaded, it was empty. Infact, as a vigilante, we always submit our bullets to our commander. We only collect the bullets in times of emergency”

“so you are saying, you didn’t kill your wife, who killed her then? Barrister Briggs asked.

Jacobs took a deap breathe and then spoke.

“Paul Adeyemi”

The whole court was shocked by jacobs’ revelation. The whole case was taking a new dimention.

“Do you know how preposterous your accusation sound? You mean he shot your wife and you just stood there?” Barrister Briggs asked.

“Immediately he killed my wife, he charged at me and hit me with his gun and i became unconscious” Jacobs narrated

“I see.

Your counselor just said Mr.paul has a personal vendetta against you so why didn’t he kill you? I mean, you are the only thing standing between him and Grace according to your lawyer, so why did he choose to kill Grace instead of you?”

“I don’t know” jacobs replied.

“you also said all bullets are submitted to your commandant until during emergencies but according to reports there was an armed robbery attack that night which means you were with bullet so how about the truth? How did you feel when you killed my daughter?”

“Objection my lord, false charge!! My client has not been proven guilty” barrister Clement shouted

“Objection sustained, Barrister lets wait till that is proven”. Justice Okoro said.

“i rest my case” barrister Briggs said. He brought out a white handkerchief from his pocket and used it to wipe the already forming tears in his eyes. He sniffed inaudibly and went back to his seat.

Whispers of eyaa, kai and the likes, were heard in the crowd.

“Would you like to cross-examine him?” Justice Okoro asked Barrister Clement.

“No, your honour.” he replied.

The judge turned to Barrister Briggs

“your next witness please” He said.

By this time, Barrister Briggs has already regained composure. He stood up and called.

“Mr. Fidelis Ogbu, please come out”

A middle aged man who was probably just a few centimetres fatter than the ‘letter I’ came out. He went straight into the dock.

“Mr. Fedelis, what kind of relationship do you have with Mr. Jacobs?” Barrister Briggs asked.

“Ah!! Na my paddy o, na me with am the follow drink for junction. Infact ehm, e dey even carry me go him house, madam go come cook better food for us. Kai, madam na good woman o” fidelis spoke.

“so were you with Jacobs on the day of the incident?”

“yesso, na me with am been drink that day sef. E call me around past 3 say make we go drink. As we come the drink na, him come tell me say e go kill him wife today. I think say na play him the play o. Around past 4 we come drink finish. By then, my friend don drink 5 bottles. I come leave am go my house o, na the next day naim i come hear say e don kill him wife” fidelis narrated.

“Why did he talk about killing his wife”

“him say as him wife the go work say she the follow men for office, say him go kill her.

“thank you mr. Fidelis” barrister Briggs said and walked back to his seat.

“Would you like to cross-examine the witness?” Justice Okoro asked Barrister Clement.

“Yes, your honour” Barrister clement said and stood up. He opened his bag and brought out three pictures.

“Mr. Fidelis, you claimed to have seen Grace right?” Barrister clement asked.

“oga lawyer i don see the woman plenty times, my friend the carry me go him house” fidelis explained.

“Good, so which of this three pictures is grace’s picture” he asked and gave the three pictures to Fidelis to choose.

After carefull observation, Fidelis chose one and gave to Barrister clement.

“Are you sure?” Clement asked.

“oga na she be that” Fidelis replied. Barrister clement then showed the picture to the judge. The picture was once again enhanced.

“According to our ‘self acclaimed’ friend of Mr. Jacobs, this is Mrs. Grace. But i tell you what, this is the picture of Genevieve Nnaji. So our friend here doesn’t even know mrs. Grace. The question is, are we going to listen to the testimony of a drunk?

Murder Case Episode 4

“How are you doing?” Barrister clement asked Mrs. Grace.

She held back tears and she spoke

“I’m fine”

“what really happened to you?”

Tuuuuaaaaaaah!!! The sniper was shot.
Everybody scampered to safety.

“someone has just been shot! Call the paramedics” A police officer at the premises shouted

***********

NATU HEADQUATERS LAGOS NIGERIA, 21ST OCTOBER 2013.

Sani Madawaki came down from his office which was located upstairs in the NATU building. He was the director of NATU.

The ‘nigerian anti-terrorist unit’ was formed in the year 2011 to curb the bokoharam crises. 500men were chosen from the nigerian police force, nigerian army, navy and all other military and paramilitary organizations to form NATU. In 2012, they went to the united states for intelligence training and came back later that same year.

They were posted to all the bokoharam infested communities but due to constant collision with the JTF and coupled with the fact that members of bokoharam had escaped from those areas, the nigerian government decided to post them to other states to aid intelligence.

250 of those men were posted to lagos state, the rest were posted to other geographic locations but have since stopped working due to the backlog of salaries they are been owed.

According to the federal government, the formation of NATU was illegal and it was duplication of office since other military groups can do their jobs. Lagos state government however accepted NATU and have been paying them.

“Jimmy, i just received a call from the commisioner of police, a sniper shot someone in the court in ikoyi. Check for any storybuilding inside 15metre radius in the court premises” sani instructed

“Got it” Jimmy replied. He was pretty fast. He was a computer operator in NATU.

There are 4 storybuildings in that location But according to reports, the bullet came at an angle of 45° which leaves us with only the Gmax building”

“Good job Jimmy, any traffic camera in the location?” sani asked.

“Even if there is a traffic cam, it wont be able to get the suspent, he was in the sixth floor” Jimmy replied

“fuucckk it!” sani exclaimed. He doesnt like working under pressure,it makes him look like a newbie.

“Although, i think we can use satellite imageries” Jimmy chipped in.

“Nah!! It wont give us the facial properties of the victim”

“I know, but we can use it to know his location. Jimmy said.

“Do it” sani said with a tone of finality and walked back to his office.

************

Barrister clement was still on the floor, he had just been shot on his arm. All the police officers had since fled the court. Mr. Jacobs was whisked away using the blackmaria. Few minutes later, soldier officers arrived the location and cleared everybody out of the court. The case was adjourned till further notice.

Meanwhile, agent white was still suprised how he missed. Barrister clement had put his hands at akimbo and agent white wanted to shoot through the hole formed by his hand but immediately he wanted to pull the trigger, Barrister briggs brought his hands down. White wanted to abort but it was too late, he had already pulled the trigger. The bullet met Barrister Clement on his arm. Before he could adjust and aim, the courtroom had become rowdy. He didn’t see Grace again and every other person Had taken cover. He had failed in his operation.

*********

Paul adeyemi walked into a building. He slid his keycard at the slot and used his fingerprint. The door opened at once. He entered and met three men inside.

“Where is agent white?” he asked.

“he is not yet back, one of the men answered him”. He did as if he wanted to unbotton his shirt and he brought out a little camera. It was the camera that the people in the building where using to monitor the court session. You would never know there was a camera there, you will only see his silver coloured large button.

He paced around the hall for a few seconds, removed his wristwatch and slammed it on the wall.
“we failed!!!” he shouted.

*****************************

“Jimmy what have you got?” sani asked, coming down from his office.

“I used satellite and i got our man, he came down from the Gmax building at exactly 1:20pm. I switched to street cam to view his face but it looks like he is a proffesional, he was putting on a hood and bent his head so i wasn’t able to see his face” Jimmy explained.

“You mean you lost him?” sani asked impatiently.

“chill!! He entered into the mall by the street. 45minutes later he came out and i sent agent musa to stalk him. We got his address, we are just waiting for your orders to arrest him.” jimmy explained.

“Jimmy, thats a decoy, the real shooter must have escaped through another route or is still in the mall” sani said.

“Not according to neighboors” Jimmy chipped in.

His neighbours claimed he Is an armedrobber who had been terrorising the area and just recently, he has been seen with strange faces”

“Jimmy this is terrorism we are talking about, not petty robbery” sani explained.

“It still doesn’t hurt to bring him in for questioning. He is our only viable lead” Jimmy advised.

“Okay then, call agent musa, tell him to go with few other field agents” sani said. Just then his phone rang and he picked it. It was the special advicer to the governor on security matters. Sani picked the call. The special adviser just wanted to know how far they where with the investigation.

“we have a suspect sir, we are bringing him in for questioning as we speak” sani replied and the line went dead.Agent white walked into the building dejectedly. He dropped the bag containing his sniper on the table and located a chair to sit without caring about the four men who were staring at him.

“Tunde what went wrong?” Paul asked. Tunde was white’s real name. They only use their various pseudos when going for operations.

“It was just some technical glitches” white replied.

“Hope you weren’t followed” one of the men who had been silent asked.

“Can they follow shadow? I made sure they lost track of me” white replied.

“Good. We just received intel that Grace has been admitted in Blue-cross Hospital” Paul informed him.

“Alright then, i will have to finish what i started” white said.

“Nah mehn, i’ll just have to visit an old friend” Paul said and smiled.

******************************

A Hilux van drove into the NATU building and went straight to the parking lot and parked.

The driver first came out then four other men came out too. One had handcuffs on his hand and from the look in his eyes, you can tell he was in a sorry state.

Two men led him into the building while the remaining men stood outside gisting. Immediately sani saw the men he went towards them.

“Good job agents, take him to the holding room. I will be there in 15minutes.” he said

The two men led him to the left wing of the building and followed a single lane route which led to the holding room.

“Jimmy i want you to pull his records for me” sani said to jimmy.

“Am on it” he replied.

****************************

Instead of the normal police station where Jacobs was previously kept, he was transported to the kiri kiri maximum prison located in ojo, Lagos.

According to the policemen, it was for his own safety as the kiri kiri prison is more secured than the police cell.

Jacobs had protested and wanted to call his lawyer but he remembered that his lawyer had been shot so he resigned to fate. The prisoners he saw there were not smiling. They all had this ‘dangerous aura’ radiating from their body. He stood there looking like a kid who was entering his class for the first time.

“Come, na ajebor you come form for prison? Shey our face look like television” someone asked him. He didn’t know how to reply him so he just stood there and continued staring at them like a scarecrow.

“You be kuruma abi? Oya skido go draw that guy come here” he ordered.

A huge guy stood up and started advancing towards him. He nearly fainted only looking at the guy’s biceps. The guy just came and hung his hand across Jacobs neck.

“Make una leave this one, him never dey used to here naim make” the guy spoke.

“Attah wetin be your own na? Na the third prisoner wey you don save today be this o, make e do you o” the guy barked. Attah didn’t reply him, he just drew Jacobs to one corner and they started chatting.

*************

Sani walked into the holding room with a file in his hand. He came with one other man. He started reading from his file

“Philip mba, arrested for armedrobbery, grantheft auto. Convicted once and is just coming out of prison. Tell me, do they have sniper classes in the prison”

“I dont know what you are talking about” philip replied.

“You see this man here, he is a former police officer. He is trained to inflict pain without remorse”

The man dropped his bag, opened it and brought out it’s content. Inside the bag was one pressing iron, one ‘talk true’ and an electric wire.

Sani brought out a picture and showed him. The man in the picture wore a black hood and a khaki, he was bending his head so his face wasn’t visible.

“Thats not me, i dont bend my head when walking” he replied. By this time, the other man had already plugged the pressing iron to an electric source, philip swallowed saliva when he saw it.

“But you were wearing this same cloth in the same area at the same time we were looking for this man. Is that a coincident?” sani asked.

Philip started getting the connection.

“i can explain” he shouted

“start talking” sani said.

“I was in that mall when a young girl was passing without looking up. She was holding a liquid. Before i could stop her, she hit me and the liquid poured on my cloth. A youngman who was watching the whole event bought this cloth for me. I even saw when he bought it. I had to wear the new cloth because i was getting late for an event.” philip explained

The two men weren’t satisfied with the explanation. The other man raised philip’s shirt and use the hot iron to press his skin. Philip shouted, his screams filled the whole room.

********\

Doctor the patient at ward 18 just woke up and is requesting to see you” a nurse informed Dr. Amos.

“I will be there soon” Dr. Amos replied.

Meanwhile, in ward 18, Grace had just woke up from sleep and the first person she saw was paul.

“Hello sweetheart” he said.

She wanted to scream but he quickly covered her mouth with his hand.

“shhhhhhh!!!! am not here to kill you” he said.

“Am just gonna give you this injection and you will go into a long sleep. When you wake up, you might be lucky to remember your name”

*********

Dr. Amos was walking fast, he was about reaching ward 18 when nurse Amaka called him.

“Dr, you are supposed to be in the theater” she said.

“yes, i’ll be there shortly, Dr. Mark is already there” he said and wanted to go when the nurse held his arm.

“what is it Amaka?” he asked.

“Its just that Dr. Mark is relatively new to suggery, i think you should be there” she said.

“Dont worry Amaka, i will be there as soon as i finish from this ward” he replied and still wanted to go but Amaka still held his arm.

“Remember our date?” she asked, smiling mischiviously

“i do, Dr” Amos replied.

“can i go now?”

Amaka was still thinking when he turned and started going. Amaka ran after him but she was too late, he opened the door to ward 18 and entered.

Again Buhari orders NNPC to search for oil in North

For the second time in three weeks, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has received an express order from President Muhammadu Buhari to explore for oil in the North.

A statement signed by the spokesman for the group, Eric Omare, said one would have expected that President Buhari-led government should focus on diversifying the nation's ailing economy, especially areas where the different regions had comparative advantage over the other.

He said, "But, at a time when we don't have enough money to run the economy, even though oil servicing charges are a lot lesser now due to the drop in oil prices, it is still not the right time to dedicate a large amount of money to search for oil in the North.
